What is Insomnia?
Insomnia (in-SOM-ne-ah) is a common condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep. This condition can range from mild to severe, depending on how often it occurs and for how long. Insomnia can be chronic (on-going) or acute (short-term). Chronic insomnia means having symptoms at least 3 nights a week for more than a month. Acute insomnia lasts for less time. The disorder consists of various presentations, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night with inability to return to sleep, a restless state between sleep and wakefulness, inability to enter a deep sleep, and inability to sleep the whole night through. Headache, dizziness palpitations and forgetfulness common accompany insomnia.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Insomnia?
Acupuncture has been used for 2000 years to calm the mind and spirit to allow a person to fall asleep and stay asleep during the night. Acupuncture and insomnia almost seem to have a natural link. Acupuncture works by calming the body’s central nervous system allowing you relax and sleep better. Without enough sleep, your body cannot regenerate itself to allow it’s natural energy (Qi) to get rid of illnesses. Acupuncture is often combined with Herbs, Scalp Acupuncture, and  Auricular Acupuncture to enhance the quality of treatment. These treatments are designed on a individual basis.

While the acupuncture treatment is effective, it works best when the patient also makes positive changes in diet and lifestyle. It is best to avoid beverages with caffeine in the hours before bedtime.
