What is Abdominal Pain?
Abdominal pain is any subjective, unpleasant and painful sensation in the abdominal region. The abdomen is an anatomical area that is bounded by the lower margin of the ribs and diaphragm above, the pelvic bone (pubic ramus) below, and the flanks on each side. The organs of the abdomen include the stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.Occasionally, pain may be felt in the abdomen even though it is arising from organs that are close to, but not within, the abdominal cavity. For example, conditions of the lower lungs, the kidneys, and the uterus or ovaries can cause abdominal pain.
How Does Chinese Medicine Treat Abdominal Pain?
The Spleen and the Stomach’s function to transform and transport vital substances in the body. When this function is disturbed by cold, summer heat and or dampness, the Spleen and Stomach function stagnates. Qi does not to flow smoothly and the end result is abdominal pain. Improper diet (indulgence of greasy food, alcohol, ice cream), emotional stress, constitutional deficiency and surgeries/traumatic injury can lead to abdominal pain.
Acupuncture treats abdominal pain by promoting the Spleen and Stomach function in transporting vital substances (food, water, air, Qi and blood) to every part of the body. When the vital substances move smoothly in the body, the Spleen and Stomach are in harmony. This harmony reduces pain.
