Acupuncture Treats Sciatica

Sciatica Pain

Sciatica is pain in the lower extremity resulting from irritation of the nerve from L2 to L4 in the spine.  The pain of sciatica is typically felt from the low back (lumbar area) to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee to lower extremities, sometimes radiates to the groan.   The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body.  Sciatica sometimes occurs because of trauma, extensive lifting, deterioration of disks, family history and or excess weight on the lower back.  In some cases, patients have no idea what happened,  just know they are in pain.

Acupuncture Treats Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages.  A blockage in the meridian pathway can produce pain in the body.  Arthritis, degeneration,  injury, and or surgery, can also produce pain in the body.  Based on an in-depth history and examination; Angie will determine where the energy is blocked and choose points along that energy pathway.

Acupuncture can increase the body’s natural production of endorphins and white blood cells to stimulate natural pain killers and harmonize the central nervous system.  This releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain to reduce pain and increase the body’s ability to heal. These biochemical changes support the body’s natural healing abilities, improve circulation, and promote physical and emotional well-being.  In some cases, improved circulation may cause the pain to increase, but this is followed by accelerated repair of the tissue.  Proper circulation is important not only for the blood to nourish the tissue, but also for eliminating muscle fatigue and pain-causing substances such as lactic acid.

Acupuncture Effective Treat Sciatica Pain

Acupuncture is very effective in treating Sciatica pain.  Treatment frequency and number of treatments needed depend on a variety of factors; the severity and duration of the symptoms and the quality and quantity of your Qi. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take weeks or even months to achieve results.  Angie may suggest one or two treatments per week, or monthly visits for health maintenance and seasonal “tune-ups”.
